Dressed to Impress

On the third day of Boys and Girls State, delegates showed up to win. With statewide elections coming to a head, outfits had to stand out. While some dressed to impress their peers or just look cool, others clearly dressed with victory in mind.

Recently elected Chamber city council member Kate (image 1) was repping her county shirt with pride. She shared that her fashion is inspired by people-watching around LA, where she spots bold and unique style choices. “I’ve grown to love pops of vibrant colors,” she said—something she embraces fully with her bright county shirt, orange Converse, and an array of fun accessories.

Looking ahead, state candidates are each nervously awaiting speeches, debates, and—most exciting of all—election results. Running for governor is Federalist George Xie (image 2), from the city of Chamber. Dressed in dress pants and repping a Boys and Girls State pin on his shoes, George came ready for his fight for governor. He shared that his style is “inspired by beachwear,” reflecting his hometown roots in California’s beach cities.

Also making a statement was Kaylee Robinson (image 3), who’s running for Secretary of State. She explained that her fashion is influenced by “women in government who wear professional, business-like clothes—but still make it look cute and girly.” Kaylee pulled it off perfectly with a coordinated red look: a bright red bow, matching shirt, and heels that somehow worked seamlessly with her American Legion tee.

Lastly, Federalist Nneka Mere from the city of Donner came for business with a sleek look: a black blazer, dress pants, and the infamous American Legion blue shirt for her speech (image 4). Since she is running for Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mere aimed for an outfit that is “simplistic, but at the same time pops”. She delivered on these words, as she showed off the blue stars on her nails. She commented, “The little things can make you so much more confident”. Through her outfit, Mere shows us the power in the little details. Whether it's having a good hair day or eye-catching splashes of color, most would agree that confidence comes from the details, something that hopefully all delegates carry with them throughout their campaigns!

Each of the four interviewed delegates are looking sharp, and we are excited to see if their fits will bring them home the win of serving as leaders at California's Girls and Boys State!
