On our second day of California Boys & Girls state, Sunday, during recreational time, all delegates were welcome to join the Forum at the Klamath patio. Leaders at Alcorn had established the history of the Forum nearly 50 years ago, and was intended to be heavily led by the delegates in order for them to discuss whatever issue is important to them.
The forum began with a topic proposed by a delegate on the death penalty and its constitutionality. The discussion went from several different points, including how many innocent people are sentenced, and in what cases the death penalty can be seen as beneficial, or in what ways it can be reformed. Later, delegates followed up with environmental concerns, especially in California, and how people from different groups or areas all pose different concerns with environmental justice and climate change. With immigration being a pressing matter in California, it naturally came up, and there were many different opinions on how the issue of ICE raids and immigration should be handled. There was also a brief discussion on international affairs and the conflict in Iran. Lastly, delegates finished with a discussion of what was liked, what could be improved on, and what observations were made in California Boys & Girls State so far.
All discussions were free of judgment, nonpartisan, and delegate-led. The forum will continue to be a recreational time activity throughout the week, so check the schedule to see where it is happening.
