Throughout the first few moments the halls were buzzing with chatter and excitement as the Whig cities and county members walked into the University Union. After previous division at the last meeting, there was talk throughout the crowd on whether or not the group would split once again. A theory that later became reality when the party supervisors, chair, and secretary, decided that for the positions: Secretary of State, Lieutenant Governor, and Governor, the Whigs would narrow it down to four candidates via acclimation. After narrowed down to four candidates, the division began. Each candidate moved to a corner of the room, where the crowd would then move towards the corner of the candidate they felt represented them most. Eventually further narrowing it down to one candidate. Or in the case of this year’s Whig governor, two candidates. Beauregard Chiasson and Ella Mauer.
However, in the case of these two, the audience was split so lose to the middle, it was hard to decipher who the chosen candidate would become. Eventually leading to a series of 4 questions being asked via members of the audience. Giving a chance for each candidate to speak without preparation or prior knowledge. Purely speaking from their own mind, beliefs, and goals. An irregular case emerged where the questions and answers did not end up making the division or choice any clearer. The room was divided in two once more. Leaving on confusion and dismay to the audience’s mental states. However, both candidates were left and the two remaining candidates were going to be the Whig’s submissions due to credible sources and news from the opposite party informing that the Federalist Party was suffering a 5 way tie. So long as the Whig audience, on Election Day, voted for either Beauregard or Ella, a Whig would end up on a ballot, as to their logic: 2 candidates to choose from will allot more votes available than 5 candidates. And in this case, they were correct, as by the end of the morning on Tuesday, June 24th, Ella and Beauregard were chosen to be the two debating candidates.
