What Your State Position Says About You

Here at California Boys and Girls State, all delegates have demonstrated exceptional talent in their local communities. We’re no doctors, but we’ve observed the varying people—and their symptoms—running for our state’s highest positions. It takes a certain kind of person to stand out and run for a state position at California Boys & Girls State. For those vying to demonstrate their leadership at the highest level among California’s most experienced students, here’s what we diagnose you with. 

Senator - You’re the Assembly’s evil twin. You absolutely live for the spotlight and would do anything to stand out. Campaigning and chanting are right up your alley. You’re loud, fiercely impulsive, and passionate about sweeping intense debates - no one’s ready to face you at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Whether it’s arguing with the teacher or fighting for club leadership at school, you’re a force to be reckoned with, and everyone knows it.

Assembly Member - You’re the slightly nicer version of the Senator. You saw that this position comes with a buddy and instantly went with it. Plus, you get to campaign in front of all your city friends for a state position! You believe collaboration gets things done, and you’re probably right.

Governor - You came to Boys and Girls State and decided to give it your all. Your goal is to be the main character of the week. However, you are a very opportunistic person and can come off as lacking in empathy. You’ve definitely read the entire Delegate Packet and Manual of Government, and you spend every free moment tirelessly campaigning for office. Where do you find the energy? Way to go, Governor!

Lt. Governor - You are the Governor’s jealous sibling. Although you hold the second-highest executive position in California, you are often overlooked, just because of the word “lieutenant” in your name. However, when you are in your element, you shine brightly. As the president of the Senate, your magnetic charisma and unique leadership prove that you, too, are an incredibly capable person. Never shy away!

Secretary of State - At the end of the day, everything comes back to you. When you got your first phone, you actually read through the terms and services of signing up, despite the pleas from your parents to just scan through it. You’re not exactly a control freak, but organization is the key to your heart. Your most honorable trait is that you are hardworking and determined, despite the fact that you don’t receive the same recognition as other roles. 

Controller - You’re the Treasurer’s more considerate half. Although you can be bossy at times, you have good intentions behind your actions. People either call you the parent or the child of the group. There’s no in between.

Treasurer - You’re a bit of a control freak and probably have won a couple of math awards. As a STEM kid, you know your strengths in organization with a strong life purpose or motto. Oh, and obviously, you love money.

Attorney General - You were the kid who told the teacher that there was still homework to turn in, and despite everyone’s dismal, you still were labeled as “everyone’s friend.” You have a strong moral compass, never willing to back down from defending the underdog. When a situation goes haywire, you are the first person that everyone reaches out to. You are unique because you like to break from the mold to set your own precedent, presiding over situations that are neither black nor white, but are morally grey. Your clarity is simply refreshing. 

Insurance Commissioner - Like the Treasurer, you like money and know how to spend it. You are a very sensible person, but you can take longer to make decisions. People often say you have an old soul, and you know it takes someone special to love insurance.

Superintendent of Public Instruction- You see the flaws of California’s education system and might have experienced them firsthand. Or maybe you are just tired of people being dumb. Either way, you took it upon yourself to educate the population, although not every problem is yours to fix.

Supreme Court Justice - You think very logically. From a young age, people described you as mature and independent, perhaps an avid reader and up stander for what’s right. Be careful though, as you often focus too much on laws that you overlook reality.
